29 liceo strike

30 lic. 36 with Alicia Arigón, Joaquin and Pablo, looking at the map, pictures of Gaithersburg, they’re to bring pictures next time; Leticia Figueredo interested in having me visit. Then to the arts high school around the block, 63. Two classes, the first with the same teacher (Natalia González) as last week, the second much shyer, with Virginia Alvez’ students. . Fabiana says I’m doing fine, but I think I’m a little tired of talking about myself…

3 lic. 59 texts on language-thought connection, but I feel like didn’t explain them very well.

5 lic. 9 meeting Laura Carabajal and Gualberto Sellanes , talking motivation, doing a better job with the linguistics ideas; then Fernanda Vázquez and Natalia Ximeno arrive, we move into the library, trying to explain charter schools; Fabiana dealing with concerns over grading changes, politics. Very interesting. Fernanda did the radio project, so to visit her and do more with that.

6 lic. 36 class visit from Beatriz Melo’s groups from the morning, 4th years, then a few 6th years with Leticia Figueredo in the library.

7 Tres cruces McDonald’s meeting Pablo Cantera, then on to school 45 in Bella Italia for video of rehearsals for urban tribes. Video wasn’t working, but lots of fotos y Buena onda.

9 Estela Palanco’s 4.40 class at Liceo 18, watching the Green Mile with subtitles in English, stopping every so often to check understanding, good group, liked hearing about my ‘Simpsons’ type house and life, asked questions. Then Fabiana’s presentation on pro-social skills, part two, theory and some practical activities to try.

10, 11, 12 strikes.

13 lic 36 with Beatriz, her son, and two students. (There was a student strike that day).

16 Lic 18 with Gabriela, Estela, Julia, Flavia, talking about the lectures from Saturday, about why teaching and learning English, for economic or humanistic impulses. In fact it is both, of course.

20 Liceo 36 with Beatriz and Julio Pereyra, the astronomy teacher who is inviting us to visit his lighthouse in Rocha, and more new students, a couple returners. He dropped the mate!

27 visit to CeRP Florida, so no IBO

30 liceo 18. Julia, Gabriela, Eugenia. Reading and discussing "On her knees," a story, and talking about ways to use literature and art in class. They want to hear about body language next time. On the bus home talking to Nelly, the principal, about her experiences at the school.

31 liceo 59, but they had an urgent meeting going on so I didn’t meet with them. Instead getting the lay of the land as far as a peer tutoring project. Visiting the ibo to see if the directora Margarita was available (no), then 63 for their directora, who gave the thumbs up, then back to 59, where the subdirectora said it would be fine. Just to coordinate with Fabiana and the profesoras to find interested students.


September


1 liceo 18 visit to Gabriela’s 9am 1st-year class, introductions, interview questions. Fabiana there too. Music history. Later in the day, speaking with the directora at 62 and the sub-directora at 9 about tutoring.

2 liceo 9 with Laura, then Fernanda and Natalia and Fabiana. Ideas for literature and tutoring and radio and free time. Stopping by 62 to hand out some sign-up sheets for the tutoring time that already exists.

3 liceo 9 Fernanda’s 1.45 fifth-year class who did the radio, questions and conversation.

6 No liceo 18, they had another coordination.

7 liceo 59 had another coordination, but when I showed up we ended up talking about parents, after-school programs, and made an invitation for students to come during lunch.

9 liceo 9 Gualberto, Laura, Natalia, Karina from school 62, discussing the tutoring idea and my education, learning Spanish in particular, the concept of lunchtime in schools.

10 liceo 26 with Mariella (PAD) and Rossina's 8am fifth-year class, lots of questions, writing, pictures, and a coffee break. Meeting Ana Bru at the bus for the Florida get-together--she taught at 26 for many years. So no more visits that day while I was at CeRP Florida with IPA, Salto and Florida students.
